Jesús Pérez Garrido, a Valladolid canoeist, has passed away at the age of 55 after an accident while participating in a sports event on the Piqueras River, in the municipality of Lumbreras de Cameros.
The Canoeing Federation of Castilla y León has confirmed, through its social media channels, the death of ‘Susi’, a member of the Racing Club of Valladolid who was left unconscious after the accident on Saturday, July 19.
The SOS Rioja Emergency Service 112 reported that at 12:32 on Saturday, they received an emergency call alerting them of a sports accident on the Piqueras River, during a canoe descent about three kilometers downstream from the town of Lumbreras de Cameros.
SOS Rioja informed the Civil Guard and mobilized emergency resources from the Rioja Health Service, while several canoeists were at the scene performing CPR maneuvers until emergency services arrived.
Due to the location of the incident, the Emergency Center also requested assistance from the General Directorate of Natural Environment and Landscape resources to help evacuate the injured person once stabilized by medical personnel, to the location where the transport means were waiting.
After being stabilized by medical resources, the Valladolid canoeist was evacuated by medical helicopter to the Emergency Department of San Pedro Hospital, where he eventually passed away.
The Canoeing Federation of Castilla y León has expressed sorrow over the death of Jesús Pérez Garrido, remembering him as a «great companion,» «passionate about canoeing,» and «an example of dedication and love for this sport.»
