Ertzaintza and Firefighters from Álava and Logroño managed to extinguish a fire early Sunday morning at a varnish company in the El Puntillo industrial estate in Oión (Álava). The incident resulted in significant material damage with no reported casualties. The possible causes of the fire are currently under investigation, as reported by the Basque Department of Security to Europa Press and SOS Rioja.
The fire broke out around 3:20 am on Sunday outside one of the businesses in the El Puntillo industrial estate, affecting its facade and causing significant material damage. The fire originated in the waste and diesel fuel storage area.
Several firefighting resources from Álava and Logroño were mobilized to the scene, as the affected area is adjacent to La Rioja and Navarra. A smoke cloud formed, affecting these two communities due to the east wind, with no reported injuries.
Additionally, resources from the Civil Protection of La Rioja and Euskadi, Ertzaintza, Traffic Civil Guard, and Municipal Police units were deployed to block access to the site due to the firefighting efforts and emergency resource mobilization.
By around 9:30 am, Álava Firefighters had successfully extinguished the fire and were still cooling and monitoring the affected area. The rest of the resources were being withdrawn, and access to the site was reopened. The investigation into the possible causes of the fire is ongoing.
SOS Rioja reported at 8:38 am on Sunday that, following the emergency response, the declared fire had been extinguished, with Álava Firefighters remaining on site to carry out finishing and surveillance tasks.
According to the intervening services at the La Rioja Coordination Center, «no personal injuries were reported, although the affected company suffered significant material damage.» The affected company is involved in the manufacturing of varnishes and industrial coatings for wood and related materials.
